From Broadway To Hollywood To History. One of M-G-M's most ingenious directors, Vincente Minnelli, is the subject of this documentary. It is hosted by his daughter, Liza Minnelli, who lovingly reminisces about her father's career on Broadway and in the movies. The retrospective begins with Minelli's arrival in Hollywood in 1940- leaving behind a successful career in the New York theatre that included not only directing but stints as a production designer, costume designer and artist- and covers his Oscar win for "Gigi" in 1958, his transition from musicals to dramas including the now classic "The Bad And The Beautiful" and his marriage to Judy Garland. The documentary culminates with his being bestowed France's highest honor, the Commander Nationale of Legion of Honor, for his loving portrayal of France in such hits as "Gigi" and "An American In Paris"-an honor he received only weeks before his death in 1986. Minnelli's twenty-six years at M-G-M left a legacy of musicals that remain the most beloved, cherished films i Hollywood history.
