Gunner Palace

Gunner Palace
In the world's most dangerous war zone, 400 American soldiers carry out their mission from the ruins of a bombed-out pleasure palace built by Saddam Hussein. Welcome to a place called "Gunner Palace" and an experience that the soldiers who live there jokingly call "minor combat"--which involves everything from executing raids on suspected terrorists, enduring roadside bombs and mortar attacks from an enemy they never see to post-raid parties around the palace pool. This is the experience of war in the soldiers' own uncensored, surprising and often humorous words. Rarely pretty, always honest, their words provide a back-beat and bulls-eye view of a war that defies sound bites, on-air updates and hidden cameras.

The Palace's major paintings, sculptures, and decorative objects are beautifully photographed here against dramatic backdrops of exquisite frescoed rooms, lush gardens, and lovely reflecting pools. The lively text weaves a web of intrigue, romance, and power in the story of the Medicis's creation of this world-class collection and the magnificent edifice that houses it.
